Matching Yourself to the Job

Demonstrating that you have (or can reasonably expect to get) certain qualifications is easy but how can you demonstrate that you possess the qualities, skills, aptitude or temperament required? The best way is by referring to something you have done which demonstrated these qualities or helped you to develop them. Selling encyclopedias might have given you endurance and a thick skin; waitressing could have developed your patience, tact and stamina.

Think through all the jobs you have done including vacation work and voluntary work; positions of responsibility you have held; even sports or hobbies you are interested in and decide if the skills you have developed could be relevant to the job you're applying for.

Give concrete examples of your skills – remember employers read a lot of waffle!

Being Somebody Special

Bear in mind that the employer is probably comparing your application with that of many other people so make the most of your experiences and achievements. Also mention any other things you think important; prizes won, voluntary work undertaken.

Decide what your selling points are and make the most of them!
