Safeguarding

As part of the commitment to Safeguarding, Acorn Training Consultants Ltd has developed policies and procedures to meet the current Government requirements on safeguarding. These will be led and implemented by:

  1. A dedicated person for ensuring safeguarding is focused throughout the whole organisation with responsibility to ensure the policies and procedures are applied correctly.
  2. A dedicated Safeguarding Designated Person (SDP) level 3 trained person who has been developed with Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) support.
  3. A dedicated level 3 person trained through (LSIS) for facilitating training and development on safeguarding and safer recruitment.

What is Safeguarding?

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 was passed as a result of the Bichard Inquiry arising from the Soham murders in 2002, when the schoolgirls Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells were murdered by Ian Huntley (a school caretaker).

The Act was created in response to recommendation 19 and the ISA was set up to fulfil this role across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. (Scotland will set up its own similar authority linked to the ISA).

The Independent Safeguarding Authority’s (ISA) role is to help prevent unsuitable people from working with children and vulnerable adults. We must assess those individuals working or wishing to work in regulated activity that are referred to us to judge if they pose a possible risk of harm to vulnerable groups.

This was initiated with the Every Child Matters Policy for protection of Children in Education and or Training. This has since developed into the Safeguarding principles, encompassing the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and now moving to the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) requirements.

As an organisation that recognises the importance of the scheme as it applies to the persons attending learning or training through the services offered at Acorn we are committed to the principles and strive to keep them developed and focused.

What is a Learner?

The learner is a person who is undergoing or will be undergoing a period of learning or training through the courses offered. These fall under the realms of:

  • Apprenticeships
  • Advanced Apprenticeships
  • NVQ / TTG (Train To Gain)
  • Foundation Learning (Formally E2E)

Who is Covered?

Every learner under the age of 18 is classed as a Young Person, and as such falls within the safeguarding principles. This includes those who are employed status as well as those who are on funded apprenticeships or training schemes, and this means that we share responsibility for the learner during the learning or training. This can be extended to 24 years where the person has specific needs.

A person who is classed as a Vulnerable Adult can be any person who has a learning need or requires a support mechanism with Local Authority collaboration. There is no age limit to the adult.
